Of course, you don’t want to let those good times lead to bad habits for your teeth. No matter where this summer takes you, keep your family’s oral health in mind. Don’t worry, we here at Lake Pointe Dental Group have some tricks on how to do just that.

5 Fun Things to Do This Summer

Wondering what all the Lake Hefner area can offer your family? Get outside and start your next adventure—just don’t forget your water, it can be hot out!

1. Local Trails

Lake Hefner has many trails to keep your family occupied. The Lake Hefner Bert Cooper Trail goes around the entire lake and spans a whopping 9.5 miles. There are designated paved trails for bikers, runners, and walkers, so pick your sport and get to exploring! You’re bound to see all kinds of wildlife along the way.

Want to get out of the sun for a nice walk? On the north side of the lake is the gorgeous Bluff Creek Park, complete with a wooded, mile-long pathway to fit your needs. The trees help block some of the wind and save your skin from the unrelenting sun on the worst of the summer days. If you enjoy mountain biking, they also have a 3.8 mile loop that’s popular among the local mountain biking community.

2. Kayaking

Would you prefer to get on the water and enjoy the breeze? On those hot days, sometimes renting a kayak or paddleboard from the Lake Hefner Boathouse can make all the difference in your mood! Lather on that sunscreen, get out there, and make those memories!

3. Parks

Lake Hefner has parks on all four sides, plenty to keep you and your children occupied all summer long.

The first stop on this park tour is the Stars and Stripes Park. This one is easy to find, right on the south side of the lake. There are a few trails that go around the playground areas, perfect for walking little ones in a stroller. For the bigger kiddos? There’s even a giant spaceship for them to climb!

On the east side of the lake is the Lion Children’s Playground. This one is nestled beside several local restaurants, so you’re set for a whole day of lakeside fun. The equipment is all close together, so this makes it easy to keep an eye on the whole crew.

The north side of the lake has Patt Murphy Park. This one is a favorite due to its shady areas and beautiful trails.

Of course, there’s a park on the west side as well! Gear up to explore the Lakeshore Estates park and enjoy the gorgeous views.

4. Picnic

What about food? With all of that playing and exploring, your children (and you) are bound to be hungry sooner rather than later. Pack a picnic and settle down in the shade of the lighthouse! This is certain to be a memorable experience, so keep that camera handy.

5. Eat Local

Not much of a picnic person? Don’t worry, Lake Hefner has some beautiful local restaurants with the best views of the lake. Have a craving for Mexican food? Look no further than Mama Rojas. What about some southwest inspired dishes? Redrock Canyon Grill is ready to satisfy those cravings! Want some steaks? Or have brunch? Hefner Grill has you covered.

Smile-Safe Summer Tips

Stay hydrated.

The Oklahoma summertime can be hot! When you’re playing outside, it’s important to keep your body well hydrated to keep away a whole slew of problems, including heat exhaustion. But the heat isn’t the only reason you need to be getting in your water.

Proper water intake helps rinse away food particles that might be stuck in your teeth. Though this is far from a replacement for brushing your teeth, it can help you last until you’re able to get home. While you’re out in the sun for a long period of time, your mouth can tend to get dry. This is more than just uncomfortable; it can cause problems with tooth decay if left untreated. Best way to treat? Drink that water!

Limit sugary snacks and drinks.

It can be tempting to eat all of the sugar-filled goodness when you’re having a day out by the lake—we get it! It’s important to enjoy those treats in moderation. Instead, pack some fresh fruit for your adventures! Indulge in those strawberries, bananas, watermelons, or see if you can find a good pineapple somewhere! Picking these instead of sticky sweats will not only help your mouth stay a little more hydrated, but it will also help pack your body full of vitamins and minerals to keep itself healthy, no matter what the next summer adventure will be.

What about cheese? We’ve got some good news for you! Cheese is incredibly good for your teeth. Dairy products in general help balance the pH level in your mouth and provide nutrients that will help keep your enamel strong and ready to fight off tooth decay.

Chew sugar-free gum.

If you can’t brush your teeth after a meal, you might have that gross feeling in your mouth. We have a very satisfying solution for you. Get yourself a pack of sugar-free gum to munch on. This treat not only helps curb cravings, but it aids in getting rid of any food particles left after your meal. This can be one of those tricks that can help you avoid extra dental visits this summer!

Use a reusable straw.

This fact surprises many people. When you’re drinking your iced coffee, tea, or even a sports drink, reach for your handy reusable straw. This helps protect the enamel from the sugars in these drinks and can help prevent tooth decay.

Keep a travel-sized oral care kit handy.

Have you ever had one of those days where your teeth feel nasty after a meal, but you can’t get home to take care of the problem? The solution is easy: Add a travel-sized oral care kit into your bag. This is especially helpful if you plan on being out all day. After all, summer fun is even better when your smile stays fresh!
